U.S. Consul General John Nay tells GTMA Luncheon Audience

“Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative a Reality as of January 2008”

The GTMA’s Annual Fall Luncheon has traditionally been a standing-room only event, and this year was no exception, with over 300 guests packing the Board of Trade dining room to hear the newly appointed U.S. Consul General of the United States, John Nay.  Mr. Nay touched on a range of issues dealing with cross-border security to the globalization of trade.

The U.S. Consul General provided a candid update on Congress’s decision to move forward with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative on January 1, 2008.  Mr. Nay’s Speech

“The increasing collaboration between Canada and the U.S. on a number of issues affecting our national and international interests has generated much discussion and clearly a topic of interest which is reflected in the strong turn-out.” commented Karen Campbell, President & CEO, GTMA.

“We’re delighted that the U.S. Consulate, with whom the GTMA has had a positive working relationship over the past years, has again collaborated with the GTMA in introducing the Consul General to the Toronto business community.” added Ms. Campbell.

Mr. Nay also provided his thoughts on the   future of NAFTA, and underscored the very profound partnership that the U.S. and Canada share, and how our two countries within the NAFTA market have become more integrated economically and have become to depend on one another more than ever before.

In his speech, the Consul General highlighted the importance of the Greater Toronto Area to the health of the Canadian national economy, and that, notwithstanding at times differences, politically or economically, there has been a greater degree of integration that has led to a more productive positive relationship between our two countries.

We were delighted to also have The Hon. Minister Sandra Pupatello, Minister of Economic Development and Trade, and   Mayor Hazel McCallion, GTMA Honorary  Co-Chair, join the luncheon and bring welcoming remarks.

“As one of the newest partners of the GTMA, we were delighted to hear      Mr. Nay, while at the same time connecting with        key contacts from the business community. The event provided an excellent opportunity to host our clients and make new contacts,” commented  Susan Blouin, Vice-President Relationship Manager, Omega’s Contact Centre Practice for Canada.

The strong turn-out from the business community provided an excellent opportunity for GTMA partners and stakeholder to network and meet.
